Dentures FAQs
As George, a dental prosthetist and the owner of Kogarah Denture and Dental Clinic, let me explain what a dental prosthetist is.
As a dental prosthetist and a healthcare professional, I have undergone extensive training to become a dental technician, first being able to manufacture all types of dentures, and then further studying to become a registered dental prosthetist to be able to manufacture and fit all types of dentures. This means that I can work directly with patients as well as receive patient referrals from dentists.
As a dental prosthetist at Kogarah Denture and Dental Clinic, my primary responsibility is to provide personalised dental prosthetic solutions to patients. This includes assessing patients' oral health conditions, taking accurate measurements, and creating custom aesthetic dentures that fit comfortably and function effectively.
Dentures are removable appliances that replace missing teeth and help restore your ability to eat and speak properly, as well as boost your confidence.
They can be full dentures (replacing all teeth) or partial dentures (replacing some teeth) on either or both upper and lower jaws.
At your initial free consultation with our skilled dental prosthetist, we will explain to you which kind of denture is best for you and show you the different types.
- Clean dentures in the morning and at night. Do this over a sink of water or towel to reduce the risk of breaking if dropped.
- Use a denture cleaning paste on a soft toothbrush or denture brush. Don't use toothpaste to clean dentures, as it has abrasive agents and will scratch and wear the denture surfaces.
- Brush all surfaces of the denture well. Rinse with cold water. Never use hot water, as this can change the shape of the denture, causing permanent damage.
- You may also soak your dentures with denture cleaning tablets at the recommended dosage on the box to help remove any stubborn stains.
- Also, clean your gums and tongue using a soft toothbrush in the morning and at night. A circular motion will also stimulate blood flow and healthy gums.
- Take your dentures out before you go to sleep at night. This will give the mouth a rest. It is always best to keep them in water so as not to dry out.
- Make sure you rinse your dentures well before you insert them in your mouth to ensure the dentures are free from cleaning agents.
Kogarah Denture and Dental Clinic can professionally clean your dentures and bring them back to new if needed with a sparkle.
It’s generally recommended to remove your dentures while you sleep to give your gums and jawbone a rest. This can also help prevent irritation and infections.
Some patients, on the other hand, may choose to keep their dentures in all the time because they don't want others to know that they wear dentures. In such cases, it is important for these patients to clean their dentures regularly and maintain good oral hygiene.
With proper care and regular checkups every 12 months, dentures can last 5–15 years.
Our patients are very happy with the longevity of their dentures due to the superior materials we use. However, they may need adjustments and repairs due to changes in the mouth and wear over time. We will help and guide you.
Initially, dentures may require some adjustment, but most people adapt quickly. Eating softer foods and practicing speaking out loud can help during the adjustment period.
We will educate you and provide you with tips on how to overcome and adapt to eating and speaking very quickly.
Regular dental check-ups with our dentist and prosthetist, typically every 6 months if you are wearing partial dentures, are important to ensure your dentures fit properly and to monitor the health of your gums and any remaining teeth.
If, however, you are wearing full dentures, upper and lower, with no remaining teeth, you can visit our prosthetist every 12 months.
As the mouth changes and the bone or gum shrinks your dentures can become loose, and the clips holding onto your remaining teeth can stretch from normal daily use, requiring adjustments.
If your dentures become loose or cause discomfort, contact us today to see our dental prosthetist. They may need adjustments to ensure a proper fit and to prevent sores or irritation from occurring.
We can make any adjustments while you wait.
Yes, dentures can sometimes cause sore spots or irritation, especially when they’re new.
We ensure that all our patients leave pain-free with a beautiful smile, with or without an adjustment.
Yes, alternatives include dental implants, implant-supported dentures, and fixed bridges. These options can offer more stability and comfort, but they may involve more complex procedures and be much more expensive.
